December 21st, 2017 - Celebrating the first year for Wakefield and Pontefract Choirs
Celebrating the first year for Wakefield and Pontefract Choirs

It has been a very busy 2017 for the newest branch of the Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme. Choral Director for Wakefield and Pontefract, Charlotte Kitson, writes about the progress of the expansion of the Schools Singing Programme in to this area..
"Last Sunday, 10th December 2017, saw the first carol service sung by the Bishop Konstant Youth Choir at St. Michael's Knottingley; the culmination of a year of hard work by the young singers. You may also recall, that the heaviest snowfall in years was forecast for West Yorkshire over that weekend, and as a result my Friday and Saturday were spent anxiously looking at the sky and scrutinising the weather app on my phone. Having spent weeks preparing with the choir, I was desperate not to have to cancel the carol service, and having to make those disappointing phone calls to parents.
This sums up what I have found over the past year in Wakefield and Pontefract; hard working and talented young singers, well supported by committed and encouraging teachers and parents. Luckily, after only a light dusting of snow, the choir sang to a full congregation in a beautiful service celebrated by Fr. Simon Lodge, who later emailed me to say, 'I don't know what I could say to improve on a wonderful service... the folks were delighted'.
I am extremely proud to report that over 800 children every week are now benefitting from participation in choral singing, thanks to the generous support of the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust. They are learning about singing technique, musicianship and the liturgy, as well as increasing in concentration and confidence.
Looking forward to 2018 and beyond, I hope to increase the opportunities available to young singers in this area. We are in the early stages of planning a Summer Singing Festival for the Academy Trust, as well as a possible tour. This is in addition to continuing to increase the number of young people accessing the Programme and always improving the standard of our music making."
