Huddersfield Girls’ Choir Tour to Newcastle & Hexham 2017
The Huddersfield Girls’ Choir are back in Yorkshire after a fabulous tour to Newcastle and Hexham. They stayed for three days during which they sang at Hexham Abbey and St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle as well as enjoying a fun-filled day exploring Hexham.
The girls received a very warm welcome at Shepherds Dean retreat centre on Friday evening and enjoyed an evening meal of fish and chips followed by a games evening run by Mrs Appleyard and Mrs Sharples. A great time was had by all and all of the girls managed to win a prize!
The next day after exploring the beautiful grounds of Shepherds Dean we set out to explore Hexham. First stop was Hexham Abbey where the girls enjoyed a talk about the fascinating history of the Abbey including a dressing up demonstration! We then completed the Abbey treasure hunt to find out more and were given special access to the crypt beneath the building followed by a trip to the visitor centre and more dressing up! The girls finished with a spot of retail therapy in the gift shop where they were complimented by the staff on their excellent behaviour. After lunch in the park the girls enjoyed a trip to the playground followed by an afternoon of ten-pin bowling.
That evening the girls sang Vespers at Hexham Abbey with repertoire including Cousin’s Ave Maria and Rizza’s Song of Mary. David Pipe accompanied on the wonderful Phelps mechanical action organ and the choir and organist were warmly thanked for their contribution to the evening’s worship.
After another hearty evening meal the girls settled down to watch Trolls the movie on the large screen projector.
On the final day of the tour we bid farewell to the incredibly accommodating Shepherds Dean retreat and travelled to Newcastle to sing Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. We received a wonderfully warm welcome and after a quick refreshment stop in the café the girls prepared for Mass. The repertoire included Delibes’ Messe Breve, Perosi’s Laudate Dominum and Frisina’s Anima Christi again accompanied by David Pipe with Alex Kyle singing the introit and communion antiphon. After Mass the David gave the girls a guided tour of the Tickell tracker action organ. The girls all agreed that the trumpets (chamade) were their favourite sound.
After a fantastic buffet lunch provided by the Cathedral we headed home feeling tired but happy following another wonderful tour.
