Scholarships are offered to students studying at Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield Universities, and Leeds College of Music. Awards can sometimes be made to gap year or sixth form students. Applications from post-graduate students are also welcome.
University Choral Scholarships are offered to sopranos, altos, tenors and basses in the mixed voice Adult Choir. The normal commitment is two early evening weekly practices (Tuesday and Wednesday) and one Sunday service. The scholarships have a degree of flexibility designed to suit the university term and are currently worth up to £1500 per annum.
Schools Choral Scholarships are available to pupils aged 15 to 18 to assist with the cost of singing lessons over the year.
Organ Scholarships are available for students intending to follow a professional career in classical music. The Organ Scholar works alongside the Director of Music to provide organ accompaniments and to assist in choral training as required. Organ scholarships are available at Leeds Cathedral and also St Patrick's Huddersfield. These are currently worth £2250 and £1000 respectively per annum.
A Choral Conducting Scholarship is offered annually for those interested in following a professional career involving work with both young and adult voices, either at a cathedral or church or in a school or community environment. As with the Organ Scholarship it affords ample opportunity to make the many contacts necessary to enter the profession. The choral conducting scholarship is currently worth up to £1500 per annum.
Scholarships run from late September to mid June, with auditions at the Cathedral. For prospective university students this can sometimes be arranged to coincide with open days. It is advisable to seek auditions early in the year if possible. Auditions for any remaining choral scholarships will be held on arrival for appropriately qualified candidates wishing to apply.
